Garage Cleanout Guide: Dumpster Size, Cost & Planning
By Keith McDonald•

The garage is the most common cleanout project we see. Here's how to tackle yours efficiently.
Typical Garage Cleanout Contents
- Old tools and equipment
- Broken outdoor furniture
- Holiday decorations you don't use
- Kids' toys and sports equipment
- Paint cans and chemicals (separate these — they can't go in the dumpster)
- Old lumber and building materials
- Boxes of "I'll sort this later" items
Recommended Dumpster Size
Most garage cleanouts: 15-yard dumpster ($350)
A standard 1-car garage or 2-car garage cleanout fits in our 15-yard roll off dumpster — our most popular and affordable option at $350. If your garage is packed floor-to-ceiling or you're also doing an adjacent shed or storage area, consider the 20-yard ($400).
Step-by-Step Plan
- Sort into three piles: Keep, Donate, Dumpster
- Remove prohibited items first (paint, chemicals, electronics, batteries)
- Start with the biggest items — workbenches, furniture, large equipment
- Break down what you can — flatten boxes, disassemble shelving
- Load the dumpster as you go — don't stage everything first
- Sweep and clean the empty garage
- Call for pickup when done
Cost Estimate
- Dumpster: $350 (15-yard) or $400 (20-yard)
- Typical weight: 1,000-3,000 lbs
- Weight charges: $200-$600
- Total: $550-$1,000
